Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the right to challenge certain calls made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
